Spent the better part of three years (2017-2019) designing, researching, and building a studio. The layout is an open room with some height. This decision was largely motivated by wanting to have a great sounding room for acoustic instruments, an acoustic space with personality that feels good to play in.
I opted to keep the space open rather than chopping it into isolated smaller rooms. I wanted to encourage an environment where musicians play in one space together, and where musicians and (me) as the engineer or producer aren’t separated by glass. These design choices were also a reaction to having spent the previous decade in small space (with low ceilings) that had been chopped up and acoustically dampened down to early 1980’s standards.
The construction and sound refining process continues and has been deeply rewarding, if also very challenging. Here are some pics from various stages…
